Patient Awarded £13,000 Following Delay In Cancer Diagnosis

A 48 year old woman from Preston was awarded £13,000 compensation following a delay in diagnosis of pancreatic cancer.

She underwent a CT scan of the abdomen on 10 September 2012 and it was reported that there was evidence of a large mass in the pancreas which was invading the adjoining spleen.  Despite the significance of that finding, she did not receive an appointment to see the consultant until 11 January 2013.  There followed a number of hospital visits, but it was not until 5 March 2013 that anyone actually appreciated the significance of the CT scan results.

A further CT scan on 15 March confirmed that the mass had spread to her kidney, spleen, colon, spine and ribs and she was diagnosed with cancer.

With the help of John Bennett on a No Win No Fee basis, she made a claim in relation to the extended pain and suffering above what she would have had if the cancer had been diagnosed sooner, as well as stress and fatigue.  The compensation reflected the effect that the delay had had on her quality of life.
